Purpose of the Catalogue
The OOVBA Public Domain Literature Library exists to provide readers with curated access to significant historical and literary works in the public domain. The catalogue adds editorial commentary—reading notes, thematic guides, and context essays—to help readers engage with these texts more deeply. It is not a substitute for the original works but a companion for study and enjoyment.
Scope and Selection
The library currently contains 99 works, all sourced from Project Gutenberg. Selection is based on the work's historical importance, thematic relevance to the catalogue's categories, and the availability of sufficient material for editorial commentary. Works are chosen to represent a range of periods, genres, and perspectives within the English-language public domain.
Source Attribution
Every book in the catalogue includes a link to its source on Project Gutenberg. The library does not host the original texts but provides editorial materials alongside bibliographic references. The publisher field for all books is listed as Project Gutenberg, and the author fields include full names and lifespan dates as supplied in the source records.
Bibliographic Records
Each book entry includes: title (including subtitle), author(s) with birth and death years, publisher, subject keywords, a target reader description, and a catalogue note. The catalogue notes are prepared as supplementary catalogue material and Catalogue maintenance uses source records and bibliographic context. It is not a full summary or critical review but a guide for reading.
Category Assignment
Books are assigned to one of four categories based on their dominant subject matter: Revolutions; Modern Nations; Social History; and World Events. Categories are navigational aids, not definitive classifications. Some works could fit multiple categories; the assignment is made with a view to creating coherent groupings that facilitate browsing.
Editorial Reading Context
The catalogue notes are written by Literary Critic OOVBA Catalogue. They assume the reader has access to the original text and do not retell the work in full. Instead, they highlight notable passages, narrative techniques, and historical context. The notes are non-specialist in tone and aim to be accessible to general readers interested in public-domain literature.
Edition Facts and Text Measurements
All works in the catalogue are public-domain editions from Project Gutenberg. No edition facts beyond the source and publisher are given. Where source text can be measured reliably, word count and estimated reading time may be provided as reading-scope information. Recommendations and Related Works
Each category guide includes three recommended books, chosen to illustrate the range of works within that category. Recommendations are based on the quality of the editorial note, the work's historical significance, and its ability to introduce the category's themes. Related works are sometimes mentioned in the archive's reading paths but are not systematically cross-referenced.
Corrections and Reader Reports

All works in the library are confirmed to be in the public domain in the United States, based on their source from Project Gutenberg.
